The new arrival - turn the flash off and use window light, increasing the ISO and brightness slightly.

To get more natural photographs of babies use window light, switch the flash off, use higher ISO, increase the brightness silghtly, half press the shutter and and wait for that special moment of interaction.
Baby photos look better if slightly overexposed - it's called a 'high key effect'.
